Can SurfEars be used for diving, snorkeling, and spearfishing? – YES!
When using earplugs for underwater activities – such as SCUBA diving, freediving, snorkeling, and spearfishing – you must be extremely careful about which earplugs you choose. As you descend underwater, the pressure increases on the outer side of your eardrum. This rising pressure forces the diver to equalize, increasing the pressure inside the eardrum to maintain balance. This equalization occurs via the Eustachian tube.
Divers are often told to avoid using earplugs while diving. The reason is that a traditional earplug seals the space between the earplug and the eardrum (the outer ear), creating an artificial air pocket that cannot be equalized like the inner ear can. Wearing a traditional earplug doesn’t affect your ability to equalize the inner ear – as many mistakenly believe – but the danger lies in the decreasing pressure in the outer ear's artificial air pocket, which can create a vacuum effect. In the worst case, this can suck the earplug deeper into the ear canal and damage the inner ear.
SurfEars has unknowingly solved the problem. The function that allows sound to pass through the earplug on land also lets a small amount of water seep into the mesh structure underwater due to the increased pressure, which equalizes the pressure on the outer ear. The amount of water entering the plug is negligible and poses no issue for the ear.

Every ear is unique in shape and size. By studying ear anatomy closely, SurfEars identified four main contact points that are crucial for comfort and allow SurfEars 4.0 to fit everyone, as both the wing and the earplug can be adjusted in size! SurfEars 4.0 comes with two sets of wings – one in large and one in small, six sealing plugs – two in large, two in small, and two in x-small, an adjustable neck strap, and a smart storage case. This lets you customize the fit exactly to your ears.
The neck strap ensures you won’t lose the earplugs and allows you to remove one and let it hang over your shoulder without losing it. The strap is detachable if preferred.
