A complete regulator set consists of a 1st stage, a 2nd stage, and an octopus. The 1st stage is the part that attaches to the tank and regulates the airflow through a hose to the 2nd stage, which is your mouthpiece.

An octopus is a secondary mouthpiece in a distinctive color that should always be carried as an extra safety measure for you and your dive buddy. Instruments and/or computers can also be connected to your regulator set.

All our SCUBAPRO regulator sets come with a limited lifetime warranty when purchased from an authorized SCUBAPRO UWATEC dealer.

SCUBAPRO's 1st Stage

The task of the 1st stage in the regulator set is simple: to reduce the high pressure from the tank to a consistent intermediate pressure. 1st stage regulators are divided into piston-balanced and membrane-balanced categories, depending on the mechanism used to control the valve that allows air to pass to the 2nd stage. Piston-balanced 1st stages can be further classified as balanced and classic downstream piston designs, with each having specific functions and responses to changes in tank pressure.

SCUBAPRO's Piston Technology

The advantage of a piston-balanced 1st stage lies in its reliability and ease of maintenance due to an efficient but simpler arrangement with fewer moving parts. Even more importantly, no other design can achieve such high airflow on a balanced piston-controlled 1st stage.

An air-balanced flow-through valve – A 1st stage with air-balanced pistons delivers more air to the 2nd stage than some other 1st stages, while its performance remains unaffected by variations in tank pressure. A balanced piston allows for the use of lighter and more sensitive components, resulting in very rapid breathing response, instantaneous delivery of air when needed, and an extra-high airflow, especially during intervals of low tank pressure. The tired diver benefits from a smoother breathing regulator during ascent or deco stops. A balanced piston 1st stage is the first choice for demanding sports divers or professionals, and it is reliable in both cold and warm water. This technology is exemplified in our MK25 1st stage.

A classic downstream piston – is the best example of reliability and trouble-free regulation with minimal maintenance. The classic downstream piston configuration is the simplest mechanism used to control the pressure drop from the tank and supply air to the 2nd stage. The classic downstream valve is the first choice for dive centers in warm and moderate water temperatures. This technology is exemplified in our MK2 PLUS 1st stage.

SCUBAPRO's Membrane Technology

Membrane-based 1st stages are environmentally sealed, preventing water from entering the mechanism. Considering that regulators operate at temperatures as low as -30°C due to the rapid movement of air and pressure changes, it is essential for sensitive moving metal parts to avoid contact with very cold water. Therefore, a membrane 1st stage is the preferred choice for divers in cold water or working in polluted or muddy water. SCUBAPRO's membrane-balanced 1st stage features a balanced technology and is packed with innovations that result in very rapid airflow to the 2nd stage and an excellent overall performance. This technology is exemplified in our MK17 and MK11 1st stages.

SCUBAPRO's 2nd Stage

The 2nd stage of a regulator set translates natural breathing behavior into a mechanical reality. A high-quality 2nd stage can reduce stress and increase safety during diving by providing an easy and low-effort breathing response, resulting in sufficient air supply. The unbalanced and classic downstream technologies are also distinctive features of a 2nd stage. They deliver good airflow performance and stability while being reliable, simple, and yielding solid results. While all SCUBAPRO's 1st and 2nd stages are compatible, some combinations result in more efficient regulator sets with higher performance.

Air-balanced Valve Technology

The air-balanced valve technology in SCUBAPRO's 2nd stage includes a balance chamber in the 2nd stage mechanism, making it easy to counteract the force of downstream air entering the 1st stage. This allows for reduced strain and decreases inhalation resistance to the lowest possible level. The result is easy breathing in all environments and conditions. Air-balanced valve technology is featured in the X-series, S-series, and G-series 2nd stages. For best results, they should be combined with balanced 1st stages like MK25 and MK17.
• X-series regulators provide extraordinary performance for excellent divers.
• S-series regulators offer fantastic airflow and exceptional presentation. They are the preferred choice for divers with great passion for the sport.
• G-series regulators are timeless classics, redesigned for modern divers. They are famous for never failing and are the preferred series for demanding divers.

Classic Downstream Valve Technology

Classic downstream valves are particularly known for their safety and reliability. When the technology is in use, the downstream valve opens in the same direction as the incoming airflow. To close the valve and stop the airflow, a spring counteracts the force of the incoming air. It always requires a slight inhalation effort to overcome the spring tension and open the valve. SCUBAPRO's robust R-series and reliable R395 and R295 are examples of this. They are best paired with MK17, MK11, or MK2 PLUS 1st stages.

Adjustable 2nd Stage Regulators

The human breathing process is individual and unique - quite intuitive - and many take it for granted on the surface. However, we realize how unique our inhalation is when we are underwater and dependent on a regulator. The harsher the diving conditions, the more flexibility and responsiveness we demand from a 2nd stage regulator. That's why SCUBAPRO has placed many adjustable features on many of our 2nd stage regulators.

Diver-adjustable inhalation effort – These features allow a diver to adjust the breathing effort through an oversized control knob. It can be found on X650, S600, and G250 2nd stages. All other 2nd stages are pre-set to an inhalation effort that suits the most common diving conditions. However, it can be fine-tuned upon request at an authorized SCUBAPRO dealer.

Venturi-initiated Vacuum Assist (VIVA) – Another SCUBAPRO patented invention, VIVA is available on all SCUBAPRO 2nd stages. VIVA uses the power of a void to reduce breathing work and, therefore, increases breathing comfort. The diver can adjust it on all current SCUBAPRO 2nd stages except R295, which is intentionally designed for dive courses and rental facilities. A MAX position on VIVA provides powerful breathing support with each inhalation, while a MIN position helps prevent free flow on the surface, making it ideal for training, buddy breathing, in currents, or when used as an octopus.

Comfort, Design, and Pleasant Features

A regulator is truly comfortable when you almost forget you are using one. Features such as natural and low-effort breathing, minimal flow resistance in the 2nd stage while breathing, freedom of movement, and overall low strain contribute to increased comfort. Here are some important comfort features of SCUBAPRO's regulators.
TTooth-regulating mouthpiece – SCUBAPRO uses a tooth-regulating mouthpiece on each of their 2nd stages to reduce jaw fatigue and gum irritation. It was developed by dentists and dental technicians and lasts longer than any other mouthpiece because you don't have to exert much effort to keep it in place.
Two opposing high-pressure ports – This arrangement of high and low-pressure hoses is essential for diver comfort. Two opposing high-pressure ports allow for individual adjustment of the 1st stage (pointing up or down). This allows the diver to position gauge consoles either on the right or left side and increases mobility for the head and neck. This feature is present on all 1st stages except MK2 PLUS.
