Roots Red Sea – A Diving Tale (Part 2)
A diving diary written by travel participant Jette Egtved Hansen.
EGYPT. DAy 2.
So, we are up (early) on the second day of our diving holiday with Diving2000. It’s so wonderful to pull back the curtains to blue skies and morning sun... something we have been longing for over the past few months. I actually think the best time at the camp is early in the morning. I just love opening the door and stepping out into the warm morning sun, standing there for a moment, and enjoying the view over the camp, the swimming pool, and further out over the Red Sea.
After taking in all these impressions, I usually stroll down to the restaurant and grab myself a cup of morning coffee. Slowly but surely, the camp wakes up, and here and there, the early risers emerge from their huts.
After our very calorie-rich breakfast (it’s probably a good thing that we’re going to be active for the rest of the day so I can burn off the three Nutella pancakes that I just had room for after toast, fruit, and omelet), it can’t go fast enough to get down to the beach and start the day’s DIVING!
All our equipment has already been transported down to the beach and is ready for us... just to jump into. We choose to do two dives on the southern side of the house reef before lunch. The sunlight hits the south reef in the morning and the north reef in the afternoon... we choose to take advantage of this.
We first swim out to “Red Dot” – a blood-red soft coral, beautifully placed on top of a coral block where a pair of lovely clownfish live. I can hang and watch these fish for hours (I’ll have to bring an extra tank next time)! They are SO cute! They defend their home and babies with beaks and claws – or at least mouths and fins. They swim right up to the tip of our noses and then quickly turn back to the safety of the coral’s protective arms... This attack and retreat continue until you move away. They are territorial and aggressive in the most adorable and charming way.
Around the coral block, there is a wealth of different life... Large and small colorful fish, beautiful lionfish, and at the bottom, there are pufferfish with their big round eyes. We also meet a couple of beautiful blue-spotted rays on our tour.
After a couple of lovely dives in the approximately 25-degree warm water and with visibility of 25–30 meters, it’s time for a healthy and delicious lunch at the restaurant on the beach again... And after lunch, a little surface time in the sun with a cup of coffee.
In the afternoon, we head towards the north reef. Here, we explore a couple of small caves where there is a diversity of beautiful, varied corals and fish. If you look closely, you might be lucky enough to spot the master of camouflage – a stonefish.
We also swing by the small pile of stones and say hello to the moray eel. It’s a hefty creature with a large scar across its nose. It tastes one of my camera lights videos but quickly decides that it CANNOT be eaten. After another two successful dives, we head back to the camp and hop in the shower to rinse off the very salty Red Sea... And then it’s time for relaxation before dinner.
Many gather in the cozy reception at the camp... Here you can catch some Wi-Fi if you need it. We talk a bit about the day’s experiences... who saw what and where... and exchange photos and videos (and maybe a G&T). When the time comes, dinner is served, and everyone heads to the restaurant. There is eating and the relaxation continues around the table... and after dinner on the outdoor sofas in the company of the camp’s dogs and perhaps a cup of coffee (or a G&T).
A lovely end to a lovely day.
