Roots Red Sea – A Diving Tale

Published on by

A diving diary formulated by travel participant Jette Egtved Hansen.

EGYPT. DAy 1.

The weather is gray, wet, and windy as we (my dear husband and I) pack the car and drive from Zealand to Jutland, specifically Aarhus Airport. We have taken the first step on our diving trip to Egypt with Diving2000.

After many weeks of rain at home, we are excited to see the sun again! There is almost a guarantee of sun and blue skies in Egypt.

We meet the other travelers at the airport. Some are new faces, and others are old acquaintances. There is an uplifting and expectant atmosphere, and conversations flow lively. Of course, we need to stock up a bit (gin is popular) before boarding the plane. This time we are flying in the evening/night, so most people try to get some sleep on the plane.

At Hurghada Airport, we are picked up in a small “bus” (I’m not very knowledgeable about cars), our luggage is thrown on top and securely tied down (we hope?). Then it’s a few hours’ drive through a lot of sand to the camp. Most people sleep soundly throughout the trip. We arrive at Roots Red Sea, which is our diving camp, around four in the morning.

After a warm welcome and happy reunions (it’s our third visit within a year, all with Diving2000), we are quickly accommodated in our lovely little huts. Many are a bit tired after the journey and take a nap – I, however, am so full of energy and expectations that I can’t sleep. I unpack and settle into the hut… and when the sun rises and shines through our windows from a clear blue sky, I wake my poor husband and drag him out into the beautiful sun… Oh, how I had missed it!

We head down to the restaurant and dive into the delicious breakfast buffet. We have been looking forward to the chef making omelets with optional fillings and delicious pancakes for us for breakfast… Oh, it’s so good! Gradually, the rest of the group arrives as well… They trickle into breakfast little by little. After a solid breakfast and COFFEE, we all head over to the dive center in the camp to register our equipment. Those who don’t have their own gear rent what they need. Everything you could need is available in the camp.

now it's time to dive..!

Finally, it’s time for what it’s all about… DIVING! We take the short walk across the road and down to the beach. Here, a whole bunch of sweet people are ready to help and service us. As a woman (and a blonde…), you just need to look a little lost – and a strong Egyptian man is immediately there to help – I love it!

We get into our gear and almost run (at least we would like to) down to the water. We stick our heads underwater…

Ah… it’s wonderful to be back in this paradise again! The beauty and diversity are equally overwhelming every time! After the first (of many) dives, we enjoy a lovely lunch at the restaurant on the beach. The food tastes just SO good after a trip below the surface! We make a virtue of necessity and enjoy our surface time on a sunbed with a cup of coffee… It’s just right.

This first day in the camp, we got started a bit late, as we only arrived early the same morning. The whole schedule is a bit shifted compared to usual… so we only manage two dives this day.

One more dive after the late lunch on the beach…

Here, we greet a large moray eel that has settled in a pile of stones, the charming clownfish, the beautiful and elegant blue-spotted rays, and many, many other beauties.

After a much-needed shower and a bit of relaxation and sharing of experiences with the rest of our travel group, dinner is served in the restaurant in the camp. What an appetite you get from diving! Everyone is hungry and TIRED! We (and most others, it seems…) choose to go to bed early – We need to be fresh for tomorrow!

Another day awaits with sunshine, good company, relaxation, good food, sand between our toes, and not least, FANTASTIC DIVING!
